Intern Story

Intern story
Started working on aa blog with friends and then discovered internships and thought that it would be a good route to go down to get into publishing.
Started to work with DOMUS - had a Skype interview

wrote an article for Doug Aitken and was published on the website
worked for boat magazine

name - interested in this type of work and internships were becoming more popular but people were not talking about them enough

work/life balance - "absolutely shite, but you can only try"

Earning a decent living - Starting to, but it didn't at first

Finding content - Alec at first, but now more of a permanent team that helps with this

Fresh, new, exciting and engaging - Diversifying the content and being innovative. Solving more of the audiences problems.

New technology in print publications - Crack magazine did an issue on Afflex Twin with a VR cover, but it doesn't seem to be a thing that will take off anytime soon

Do you have an office space? - 18moths at ne point, yeah but now the money goes into the launching f the website. Working from home and then also cafes and the central library. You do not need an office space as money is important to save. Need a lot of motivation to work from home - set alarm, get dressed walk for 10 mins and then enter your house and be in work mode.

Making Intern
Started with a print edition, using The Newspaper Club - proof of concept
Made a video to promote the idea and then launched it on Kickstarter

Very hard to make a profit on the print editions as they cost about 12k to make and print - online coverage is easy but need more people to buy
£10 magazine you get £4 from it

Evolution
Strategy at the minute is to diversify and look at different ways to produce digital content
Terms and conditions - legal advice events for students/graduates across the country. Just won a pitch with WeWork
Trying to win a grant from the ArtFund - need to be clever with interpretation as often fine art, but if it has good community impact or social change it might be accepted

Finances
Taking at Universities and doing workshops kept the finances flowing in so that the printed publications could be made.
The White Pube - publish the break down of costs and if they think they have been under paid they will review the company/designers  (http://www.thewhitepube.co.uk/)

Influential people Alec has met - Abriham to get in to do Creative convos, Sophie has helped with the Podcasts and has got the meeting at Facebook (advertising industry in London - Dare) and Marlyn used to run the operation side of Glug and has introduced Alec to a lot of people that have now become clients.

One regular member of staff, Lorna but she is at Open Set which is a research lead programme in Amsterdam.
Needs someone with lots of different skills
