Penguin - Competition entry

Evaluation

The book cover design successfully reflects the nostalgic style of writing by Japanese author Haruki Murakami through the use of illustration as it is suggestive of a mental state that is reflective. The moonlit sky is a main focus within the book so this was taken and used as part of the front cover so that the reader starts to think about its relevance and impact on each of the character’s mental states as the story is told.
The brief stated that the book cover design must have an imaginative concept and be an original interpretation and through research into the existing book covers for this novel, the design is not close to any that are existing. A close analysis into the themes within the storyline the developed illustration is an imaginative conceptual response to the moonlight and mental health within the book. The typeface was chosen through research into Japanese Graphic Design, but this could have been further developed with more time to experiment and maybe manipulation could have driven this to be more powerful.
